HANGBÉ
History left her out. The Foundation writes her back in.
Founded in Porto-Novo in 2005, the Foundation carries the name of a queen of Danxomè whom the history books had passed over. It continues her work: defending women’s rights, educating girls and carrying books to the smallest village in Benin.

Welcome to the Reine HANGBE Foundation.
The Reine HANGBE Foundation is a Beninese non-profit association. Named after the famous queen of Abomey, the Foundation works for a society free of violence and discrimination, where women and children thrive.
We act in several complementary areas:
- the human rights of women;
- the education of girls (literacy, girls’ schooling);
- “One child, one book” — our travelling Bibliobus library that brings books and reading to children in schools and villages;
- the fight against gender-based violence;
- women’s leadership;
- our awareness-raising campaigns.
Since 2017, our Bibliobus and our volunteers have travelled across Benin to meet children, read with them and encourage academic excellence — especially among girls.
